A4 - An exhibition on a piece of website
17.6. - 29.7.2012
The virtual space in which this exhibition takes place is the extension of Hösl&Mihaljevic's contribution to the show of Künstlerbund Baden-Württemberg members in Stuttgart. Every member of this organisation was invited to participate with an A4 sized work. The two A4 papers of the artist couple Hösl&Mihaljevic, designed by Vienna based graphic designer Astrid Seme, work as a link to a website, where the exhibition is on view.
By tearing a little paper on which the URL link is written, visitors have the possibility to look at the website on their home computers, or entering the space directly by scanning the QR code with their smart phones. Thus the exhibition can be viewed at any time, in any country, and will be complemented with new works in regular intervals over its duration. The problem of realizing a collaborative work (Hösl&Mihaljevic invited me to curate their A4) in a very limited format was solved by virtually enlarging the piece of paper. This is reflected by the graphic design of the website, which appears as a - in theory endlessly - stretchable A4 paper, providing enough space to present all artworks.
The invited artists were asked for sending files, which could be exhibited in the virtual space as self-contained artworks. This means that, as a visitor of this site, you are confronted with artworks which are solely presented in this virtual space, without being a substitute for a tangible piece in the 'real world'. As a result the displayed works largely examine their virtual existence.
Artists who are usually not working digitallly were invited as well as artists with a particular focus on digital media. These very different approaches to the virtual existence of artworks are on display from June 17 until July 29, 2012.
